SIGEP Asia & Restaurant Asia 2026 was held from 15 to 17 July at the Sands Expo & Convention Centre in Singapore, bringing together companies from the foodservice, hospitality, bakery, commercial kitchen equipment and wider F&B industries.
SIGEP Asia is an international B2B trade show for the F&B and Ho.Re.Ca. foodservice sectors, covering areas such as artisan gelato, pastry and bakery, chocolate, coffee and tea, food products, machinery and related services.
SHIFT HUB attended the exhibition to meet companies involved in commercial kitchen equipment, food-processing technology, water treatment, sanitation and related services.
One conversation in particular demonstrated how a trade show contact can develop into a practical sales opportunity for a Japanese product.
A specific request from a Singapore distributor
A Singapore-based food equipment distributor expressed interest in selling a Japanese sandwich-cutting machine.
The company had already identified the type of equipment it wanted. The next challenge was to establish an effective commercial connection with the Japanese manufacturer and determine whether the product could be supplied and supported in Singapore.
This was not a general request for information about Japanese food equipment. It was a specific requirement from a distributor serving professional kitchen and bakery customers.
That distinction is important. When a distributor already has a product category, application and potential customer base in mind, the discussion can move beyond initial product promotion towards a realistic commercial opportunity.
Clarifying the requirement before approaching the manufacturer
Before contacting a Japanese manufacturer, it is necessary to clarify the distributor’s requirements.
Relevant questions include:
- Which product or machine function is required?
- Who are the intended customers?
- In which country will the product be sold?
- Is the company considering a distribution arrangement, project-based sales or another commercial model?
- Can the distributor provide installation, maintenance and after-sales support?
- What product information has it already reviewed?
- What English-language materials, pricing information or product demonstrations will it require?
A well-structured enquiry gives the Japanese manufacturer enough information to assess the opportunity. It also reduces the risk of an introduction failing to progress because the intended application, target market or commercial arrangement is unclear.
SHIFT HUB’s role is to organise this initial information and facilitate a practical commercial introduction. Product specifications, pricing, distribution terms and technical support are then discussed directly between the distributor and the manufacturer.
When the initially identified product is not the only option
A distributor’s demand does not always need to lead to one predetermined manufacturer.
The initially identified product may not be available for overseas sales, may already be represented in the target market or may be unsuitable under the proposed commercial conditions. Even in such cases, the underlying market requirement may still be valid.
The next step may therefore be to identify another Japanese manufacturer offering equipment with a similar function.
This demand-led approach starts with what the local company and its customers need, rather than attempting to promote a product before confirming market interest.
For Japanese manufacturers, it can also provide a more useful starting point: a defined application, a potential local sales channel and a clear reason to enter into discussions.
Other potential routes identified at the exhibition
The exhibition also led to conversations with companies in the water treatment and sanitation sectors, including suppliers of filtration systems and other water-related equipment.
These contacts may be relevant to Japanese technologies designed for food processing, cleaning, sanitation or professional equipment applications. As with the food equipment enquiry, the first step is to confirm the commercial application and level of interest before arranging an introduction to a Japanese technology provider.
We also spoke with an F&B franchise business that was open to introducing relevant products to restaurant chains.
An F&B operator is not necessarily a distributor, but it may help identify a genuine equipment requirement within a restaurant chain or central kitchen. Starting with the end user can sometimes reveal which distributors, installers and maintenance providers are already active in the market.
The value of trade show follow-up
The value of a trade show visit is not determined by the number of contacts collected.
An initial conversation becomes commercially useful only when the parties clarify what is being sought, who will use or sell the product, which market is involved and what should happen next.
In this case, the practical follow-up is to:
- confirm the Singapore distributor’s product and customer requirements;
- identify the appropriate contact at the Japanese manufacturer and confirm the product’s overseas sales status;
- determine whether English-language product information and pricing are available, and whether the manufacturer is open to commercial discussions; and
- arrange an initial introduction if there is a reasonable basis for further discussion.
Connecting Southeast Asian demand with Japanese manufacturers
There is clear interest in Japanese products among certain distributors and equipment companies in Southeast Asia. However, identifying a product does not necessarily mean that the local company has an effective route to the appropriate manufacturer.
SHIFT HUB helps distributors and sales partners in Singapore and Southeast Asia identify relevant Japanese products and manufacturers, clarify their initial commercial requirements and establish contact with the appropriate provider.
We do not guarantee product availability or the conclusion of a distribution agreement. Our role is to create a practical starting point for direct commercial discussions between the companies involved.
If your company is looking for a Japanese product, manufacturer, technology or component, please contact SHIFT HUB and tell us what you need.
